Crafted with grapes from some of the oldest vines on our estate, this premium Merlot is brimming with cocoa, plum, cherry, mulberry and sagebrush aromas. A robust palate of dusty ripe berry fruit, toffee, and Italian plum is balanced with a subtle mineral acidity. Pair this delectable wine with coffee and cherry infused duck breast or a rack of your favorite BBQ ribs.
The 2017 growing season was one of marked contrasts, overall however it was an outstanding year. The season commenced with above normal precipitation, resulting in rapid early vine growth, which necessitated increased grapevine canopy management in late spring. The wet spring was followed by a classic Okanagan summer of hot, dry weather. This provided ideal growing conditions for superior vine growth and berry development and ensured the grapes reached full phenolic ripeness. Growing Degree Days continued their above average trend totaling 1422 (GDDs) for 2017, well above the 13 year average of 1054 for the Oliver area. Harvest commenced in late September for our whites. The red varieties were harvested in October where the warm days and crisp, cool nights assisted in fully developing grape flavours, while also retaining their acidity. All grapes were harvested by hand to maximize fruit intensity.
This vintage is made with handpicked grapes from Block 2 on our estate following an excellent growing season. The vines were planted in 1972 and consistently deliver lushness and intensity. The fruit was hand sorted, de-stemmed and fermented over 18 days in our Italian style Ganimede fermenters for the desired aromas, colour and flavour extraction. These unique fermenters mix the fruit in a gentle process encouraging a full expression of the wine and the vineyard. Aged primarily in French oak for one year, this complex wine is a beautiful reflection of Golden Mile Bench fruit.
