Growing conditions: The 2015 growing season was one of the warmest on record, with harvest commencing approximately 2-3 weeks ahead of schedule. Precision viticulture with careful canopy management, targeted leaf removal, shoot positioning, and controlled drip irrigation, helped supplement the development of these old vines. The record-breaking high temperatures slowed down in the fall, with cooler autumn evenings enabling a more even ripening process. Overall the vintage produced grapes with ideal ripeness, acid balance and a multitude of robust flavours.
Winemaking notes: From some of the oldest plantings on our vineyard, this classic blend is almost equal parts Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Our lower yielding old vines fruit is put through an extended maceration in an effort to gain the ideal extraction of flavours. Fermented separately in Italian Ganimede fermenters, the malolactic fermentation is finished in tanks before each varietal was aged separately in French and American tight grain oak barrels. Select lots were then chosen, blended, and returned to oak to allow the components to harmoniously integrate. An iconic wine, which we have been crafting for a decade, this stellar vintage is a worthy representation of the Golden Mile Bench.

A blockbuster BC red wine with fairly firm tannins that will smooth out with cellar time, then decant 1-2 hours. Aromas of black fruit, smoke and toasty oak. Winemaker Robert Summers makes this wine from some of the oldest vines in the Okanagan for this wine on the Golden Mile Bench. It's a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot grapes. This is stunning: Bordeaux elegance, BC power. Pair with a rare steak or lamb.
Wines in Niagara - Rick Vansickle (Oct 2018) : 93 pts
This signature wine from Hester Creek sourced from the estate’s oldest vines (some of the oldest in B.C.) is the opposite of restrained and will appeal to lovers of big red wines and will not impress those looking for nuance and (perhaps) balance at this young stage. This is a wine that needs years of cellaring until it approaches any sort of balance. The nose is rich, dripping in generous notes of blackberries, black cherries, black currants followed by caramel spice, toasted vanilla and eucalyptus. It’s a well-structured wine on the palate with a riot of red and dark fruit backed up by plenty of oak spice, bramble, earth and a minty accent on the finish. It needs some aging to polish it all up and round out the wall of thick tannins, but you will be rewarded. Cellar 8+ years.
Gismondi on Wine - Anthony Gismondi (Oct 2018) : 91 pts
The 2015 growing season was the warmest ever at Hester Creek. This wine is fully ripe and the texture long, soft and persistent. Despite the warm year the minerality and chalky notes noted in some earlier versions were poking through the ripe, plummy fruit. This needs time to express its full glory and rich New World style. Tasted October 16, 2018 at a ten-year vertical at the winery. Aged 24 months in a mix of 75/25 French/American oak. The blend is 29.5/38/28.5/2/2 merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot and malbec. Growing Degree Days (GDD) 1764.
